Description
Visit is a new open-source visualization application that was developed
under the Department of Energy's Accelerated Strategic Computing
Initiative (ASCI). VisIt is intended to support the wide variety
of computational science and engineering analysis tools used within the
ASCI program, and to be deployed on a variety of desktop and
supercomputer platforms. Therefore, VisIt's features and
capabilities read more like a high-performance production-grade
commercial visualization application than a free software package
available for download from the web.
Features
VisIt supports a wide variety of visualization capabilities and data
formats, including data representations (e.g., SILO, EXODUS) that
include support for parallel processing applications. Although
VisIt is free software, its feature list includes most of the high-end
capabilities of commercial tools (e.g., support for scalable rendering
of contours and isosurfaces), as well as powerful features that extend
VisIt's core capabilities, e.g., scripting in the Python language,
extensibility through plug-in interfaces, etc. VisIt's UCD
(Unstructured Cell Data) data type permits flexible integration of
VisIt's features with existing finite-element analysis tools, and its
built-in capabilities for visualization and data manipulation are
sufficiently broad so as to support virtually all aspects of
computational engineering, including the fluid mechanics analyses
required for modeling tsunamis.
Pricing and Software Metrics
- Supported platforms include Linux and Windows desktops, and Linux
clusters for scalable rendering. An OpenGL card is required for
effective use.
- Software quality is of the Community grade.
- VisIt is an open-source application, hence it is available for
free download from the URL above.
